As per the latest available Annual PLFS Reports, the estimated Unemployment Rate (UR) on usual status for youth aged 15-29 years was:
• 12.9% in 2020-21
• 12.4% in 2021-22

This data shows a declining trend in youth unemployment in India. However, the overall unemployment rate remained over 8% for five out of the first eight months of the current fiscal year, reaching 8.1% in 2023-24.
According to the India Employment Report 2024 by the Institute for Human Development (IHD) - International Labour Organisation (ILO), the global youth unemployment rate stood at 15.6% in 2021. Additionally, the 'India at Work 2024 Report' by Apna.com noted 7 crore job applications, marking a 25% annual surge.
These figures highlight the growing urgency to bridge employment gaps in India, especially as the country progresses toward its $5 trillion economic goal.
